Abstract
This study was conducted based on the consideration of the problems that students had, especially on the low of reading ability. Based on research findings of the study the fact that average score obtained from the pretest was 59 and passing grade of English Lesson was 75. It means that, the students could not achieve the minimum standard of school target. It was also found that the student still got difficulties to comprehend the text. Based on the problems that the researcher faced in the classroom, this study focused on solving the problems related to how the students comprehend the text. This study purposed PQRST strategy to improve the students’ reading comprehension. The research problem is “How does PQRST strategy improve eight grader’sreading comprehension of recount text at SMP Muhammadiyah 7 Cerme?”. The design of the study is classroom action research. The researcher played two roles in this research as a teacher and researcher. During implementing PQRST strategy in the classroom, the researcher was accompanied by a teacher partner. The research was conducted in one cycle, which was divided into four main activities: planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The reflecting based on the findings during the observation and compared with the criterion of success is the average score of the test is 75 (passing grade of English Lesson). The research finding showed that this strategy was effective to teach reading at SMP Muhammdiyah 7 Cerme. It was indicated on the students’ average score of post test in cycle one. The students’ average in pre test was 59; after applying PQRST strategy the score improved in the post test. The students’ average score in post test was 75. Based on the research findings, two suggestions are provided. The first, the English teacher was recommended that PQRST strategy was good strategy to teach reading for the students. The second, the next researchers who want to conduct a research using PQRST strategy, they could use in the different research design in order to get variation of the research or it could be in the same field of the study in different levels of education and areas with various types of students.
