Abstract

This study is aimed at finding the significant effect of cooperative script strategy in teaching reading comprehension for the eighth grade students at SMPN 1 Sidayu Gresik. To achieve this purpose, the researcher applied quasi- experimental design. The research was carried out at SMPN 1 Sidayu Gresik from May 10th 2013 to June 3rd 2013. The sample was taken from best classes which have the best English score at final test in the first semester of academic year 2012/2013 at SMPN 1 Sidayu Gresik. The sample consists of 60 students, VIIIE is consisting of 30 students as control class and VIIIF is consisting of 30 students as experimental class. The instrument that is used to collect data is reading comprehension test to get scores of the students reading comprehension. Before the instrument was used, a try out was done to know the validity and reliability of the instrument. After pre- test was given, the treatment was conducted in four meetings, then the researcher held post-test to get the research data. Based on the result of data analysis, the research showed that there was significant different between the students reading comprehension achievement who were taught by using cooperative script and without cooperative script. It was proven from students’ score in post-test scores both experimental and control group that the mean score of students in the experimental group was 82,17, which was higher than the control group who gained 71,33. The significant different is shown by statistical, the value of Sig. (2-tailed) = 0,00 was under the 0,05 level of significance. Based on these research findings, it can be concluded that cooperative script strategy has significant influence in reading comprehension of the eighth grade students at SMPN 1 Sidayu Gresik. In conclusion, cooperative script is effective to teach reading comprehension for the eighth grade students at SMPN 1 Sidayu Gresik.
