Abstract

English as a foreign language in Indonesia has growth. English is not only taught in Junior or Senior High School, but also in Elementary School. In learning English, especially orally, pronunciation as sub-skill of speaking is important to introduce early in Elementary School although there is no pronunciation subject in Elementary School. There are some students understand about pronunciation and there are some students do not understand well about that. It may cause by the students motivation, because motivation is the essential factor to learn something. In this case, the researcher interest to investigate the correlation between students’ motivation to learn English and students’ pronunciation ability by conducting a descriptive correlation study in SDN Banjarsari. In this study, the researcher chose the 4th grade students of SDN Banjarsari as subject. The data was collected by using questionnaire and pronunciation test. The questionnaire was used to get the answer of students’ motivation and the pronunciation test was used to get the score of pronunciation ability. After gained the data, the researcher analyzed the data by using the statistical computation of SPSS 15.00 and used spearman’s rho formula. The research finding from the computation of data showed that there was positive correlation between students’ motivation and students’ pronunciation ability, because the correlation coefficient of the study was rs = 0.515, P-value = 0.000, P-value < 0.05. From the correlation coefficient can be known that Ho was rejected because the sig < α (the significance level ρ smaller than 0.05). It means that there was significant correlation between students’ motivation and students’ pronunciation ability and the correlation coefficient belongs to strong correlation because the value < 0.8. The motivation scale showed that most of students in 4th grade of SDN Banjarsari have high motivation and the pronunciation score also showed that most of students have high pronunciation score. Through the questionnaire and the test gave by the researcher, the teacher could known how far the students’ motivation and how far the students’ pronunciation ability. The teacher can choose the appropriate method, material, and the way how to motivate their students in order to increase the students’ pronunciation ability.
