Abstract

Vocational school is one of the schools that is a favorite destination for students after they graduate from junior high school. This vocational school graduates will be expected to enter a field of work and be able to directly apply their skills which they get from vocational school. Therefore, if the students only master these skills without any supports of a good English communication skill, then it is considered not optimal. Unfortunately, learning English in most vocational school in Indonesia is still not optimal. Furthermore, mastering vocabulary is important for students of vocational school, especially in the first year. Most of them find difficult in learning because many terms of their subject are adopted from foreign languages especially English in their handbook. Thus, this research is to develop an English vocabulary material especially for patisserie class. The objective of this study is to develop English contextual vocabulary material for tenth grade patisserie of vocational high school at SMK Dharma Wanita Gresik in order to be integrated with their expertise and their vocational competence. The approach used in developing this reading learning materials is content-based instruction approach. The design of this study is research and development (R & D). The steps of the study are need analysis, design, development, expert validation, try out, revision of material, and final product. Based on the process of developing English contextual vocabulary using web for tenth grade patisserie class at SMK Dharma Wanita Gresik, the total of percentage of the students’ perception was 80%. Related to the total percentage of students perception towards the vocabulary material, it can be concluded that the number obtained was quite high which mean students perception toward this product was really good. The other researchers were suggested to have deeper understanding about content-based approach and create materials which are more suitable with the setting, input, and activities that correspond to the students’ needs and the students’ profile. Furthermore, the English teachers should be more creative and innovative in combining the materials in the learning materials with the teaching and learning process in the classroom.
