Abstract
Evaluation of textbooks needs to be done for better results in the teaching and learning process in the classroom. Evaluation of the use of textbooks can influence learning outcomes and learning processes. Brown and Rogers (2002) define evaluation as the process of seeking the value of something for some purpose. Thus, evaluation of textbooks is important to do before students use textbooks to study. Research design of this study is Qualitative Research. The research method used by researcher is the content analysis method. Researcher found that the questions of lower order thinking skill were 38 and the questions of higher order thinking skill were 35. It also shows that the distribution of the lower order thinking level obtained 52% while the higher order thinking level only obtained 48%. It means that the ratio between the lower order thinking level and the higher order thinking level was 1,1:1. There were 11 essay reading questions which belong to the analyze skill among 73 essay reading questions in Bahasa Inggris textbook. There were 24 essay reading questions which belong to the evaluate skill among 73 essay reading questions in Bahasa Inggris textbook. There was 0 essay reading question which belong to the create skill among 73 essay reading questions in Bahasa Inggris textbook. Based on the result of evaluating the higher order thinking skills in reading exercises in Bahasa Inggris textboox for the eleventh grade of senior high school, that the distribution of the lower order thinking level obtained 52% while the higher order thinking level only obtained 48%. The total distribution of the analyze skills’ question of higher order thinking obtained 15% of the total reading essay questions. The total distribution of the evaluate skills’ questions of higher order thinking obtained 33 % of the total reading essay questions. The total distribution of the create skills’ questions of higher order thinking obtained 0% of the total reading essay questions. In the light of these data, the researcher recommends modifiying the reading exercises by providing them with more enrichment material that include Higher Order Thingking Skill. The authors of textbook need to produce a series of learning objectives that further highlight some exercises that can train students to have high-level thinking skills. In addition, teachers should also encourage students to practice critical thinking so that their higher-order thinking skills can be better. In addition, the reader in this study is expected to get some references or perspectives on the selection of textbooks, as well as the importance of high-level thinking skills in Education and social life.
