Abstract

According to Hidayati (2013), vocabulary is the first element that must be mastered by the students before they move to the other elements. Unfortunately, vocabulary learning is one of the most common problems in English learning. Besides limited knowledge of vocabulary and sentence structure, learners are also bored with learning language without activities but listening (Huyen and Nga, 2003). This research is aimed at observing the implementation of Jigsaw to increase students’ vocabulary mastery in SDN 3 Randuagung Gresik. This research used Classroom Action Research design which uses test as instrument; pre test and post test. The data was recorded and was reported in the form of description. This research only used one cycle with six meetings including pre and post test. After cycle 1, the result showed that Jigsaw can improve student’s vocabulary mastery. The result of the research shows that Jigsaw had been done successfully in the classroom. While in observation, the researcher found that there were two things that became points of consideration in deciding the cycle; 1) Students’ enthusiasm, and 2) Score. The researcher found that students felt happy and did not get boredom while learning process. As the conclusion, they enjoyed learning vocabularies used jigsaw. Moreover their vocabulary mastery were increased. This study can be as a reference for the teacher in improving the quality in applying the effective technique toward improving the students’ learning motivation and achievement in learning English. The researcher suggested for the next researcher to develop a material containing vocabularies for elementary school by using jigsaw strategy.
