Abstract

Speaking is one of important way to communicate an ideas and message orally from the speaker to the receiver and the receiver can understand what the speaker talk about. Meanwhile, self esteem is an assessment of individual that expressed through his attitudes. Here, the researcher wants to know whether there is correlation between self esteem and speaking fluency or not. So, the reseacher gives the questionnaire to the students. That is why, this study to find the Relationship Between Self Esteem and Speaking Fluency for Third Semester Students of English Language Education Department at University of Muhammadiyah Gresik is needed to answer this phenomenon. This is Quantitative study which is needed in correlational study. 53 students of A, B and Evening classes are the sample of this study. They are 3rd semester students at University of Muhammadiyah Gresik as subject. The data was collected by using questionnaire and speaking fluency scores. The questionnaire was used to get the answer of students’ self esteem and used intermediate speaking skill as the score of speaking fluency. After gained the data, the researcher analyzed the data by using statistical computation of SPSS 15.00 and used spearman’s rho correlation. The researcher finding from the computation of data showed that there was positive and moderate correlation between self esteem and speaking fluency (r=0.452). Furthermore, the p-value was 0.001. That is why the null hypothesis (H0) can be rejected. It means there was significance correlation between self esteem and speaking fluency at 3rd semester students of English Language Education Department at University of Muhammadiyah Gresik. Finally, since the result of this study is positively, medium, significantly correlated, it is suggested to conduct studies which aim to find best way how to make students self esteem higher in order to increase the students’ speaking fluency.
