Abstract

This study aimed at investigating which type of communication strategies (CS) used by Thailand students in learning English at University of Muhammadiyah Gresik. While attending English language class how the Thailand students communicate with the other students. The subjects were Thailand students in University of Muhammadiyah Gresik in second semester. There are five Thailand students which divided in to three different programs. English Education Program, Islamic Education Program, and Elementary School Teacher Program. This study was designed as descriptive qualitative and the instruments used was the researcher through some actions such interviewing the lecturer after the class finished and doing observation in the class while English lesson from the start until the end. The findings showed based on previews study there are nine (9) types of communication strategies but in this research there were five (5) types of communication strategies (CS) found in teaching and learning process that used by Thailand students. Thailand students preferred to use approximation, circumlocution, literal translation, appeal for assistance and mime. Approximation is one of type communication strategies that the most used by Thailand students in learning English. Based on the findings, they used certain strategies to facilitate their conversation in order to get the goal of communication during class sessions. The findings provide empirical evidence of the importance to use communication strategies for the students.
