Abstract

In EFL classroom, using two or more languages is common situation that occur during teaching and learning process. This is occurred because the students cannot use English language and use their first language naturally instead. This situation leads the teacher to use first language to build the interaction with the students. Used two or more languages to communicate is called code switching. The teacher use code switching in the learning process to make it easy for them to transfer the knowledge for the students if they feel difficult to understand the English. In the process to analyze the procedure of code switching during ELF classroom interaction, the researcher did the classroom observation and interviewed the teacher. The findings indicated that the teacher used code switching in EFL teaching learning process in 3 kinds of way. Those are: (1) Situation awareness: the teacher should be aware of the situation where code switching is needed, (2) Translating: the teacher switched the language by translating the words into another language with the same meaning, (3) Repeating: after making a translation, the teacher repeats the words after the original words. Moreover, the switching of language was used by the teacher to help in interacting with students with the lack of English vocabularies knowledge. The code switching was used for explaining difficult topic, giving command or instructions, and building a better relationship with students. The researcher hopes that this study gives contribution about knowledge of code switching that occurred in EFL classroom interaction and provide the model of code switching that can be practiced by the teacher in the classroom teaching and learning process.
