Abstract

This study proposed Contextual Teaching and Learning by using Movie clips to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery. The research problem here is, “How does contextual teaching and learning by using movie clips increase students’ vocabulary for the fourth grade students at MI.Miftahul Ulum Gresik? The design of the study is classroom action research. During implementing CTL using Movie Clip in the classroom, the researcher was accompanied by a teacher partner to observe the class. This research was conducted in one cycle with five meetings of action which is divided into four main activities; planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The findings during the observation and compared with the criteria of success including (1) 100% students can pass the test well, with the minimum score is 80, and (2) 84.36% students condition are active which is better than before the action research. In Conclusion, the research findings showed that Contextual Teaching and Learning by using Movie Clips was effective strategy to teach vocabulary at MI. Miftahul Ulum Gresik. It was indicated on the students’ score of post test in cycle I. The students’ average result in pre test was 13.9% students could pass the test well. The score improved in post test. The student’s average result in post test was 100% students could pass the test well. The improvement was also shown in the students’ performances in the class. It can be showed that the class performance improved or more active each day from the first meeting to fifth meeting. In conclusion, the CTL by using movie clips can improve students’ vocabulary and become good method to teach English especially to young learners. Based on the research findings, two suggestions are provided. To give contribution on the teaching and learning process and also find variation in teaching and learning using CTL with Movie clips, it is better if the next researchers implement it to improve other skills. The next researcher also can use CTL to improve students’ ability by using other media, not only movie clips just like this research. It can be in form of picture, game and other media.
