Abstract

Reading is meaningful interpretation of printed or written verbal symbols. It means that reading is a process of building up the meaning as the concepts by printed words. Thus reading activity involves sensing, perceiving, achieving meaning, and reacting in a variety of ways. Researcher uses second grade in language class. Those classes consist of 36 students to collect the data. From the result, 70.97% of the students like the use of poetry in reading. 70.97% of the students told that they were interested in reading the poetry since the topic of the poetry attracted their attention. There were interested in the teaching learning process of reading analytical text using poetry. The statement of the problem in this research is “Implementation and students’ responses of poetry as supplementary material for teaching reading of analytical exposition text”. The purpose of this research is to implement and using poetry as supplementary material then to know the students’ responses about poetry in analytical exposition. The design of this study was Descriptive Design. In this study, there are three procedures of research design there was giving pre-teaching, whilst-teaching, post-teaching, giving questionnaire and students’ answer sheet were conducted among the study in this research and the data was analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. The use of poetry as material in teaching English can help the students in the Second Grade in Senior High School to read. It is showed by the result of the students’ answer sheet. Based on those result, it could be seen that half of the students in the class like the use of poetry in reading. Just a few students were unable to be active in the teaching learning process. The active students told that they were interested in reading the poetry since the topic of the poetry attracted their attention. They were interested in the teaching learning process of reading analytical exposition text using poetry.
