Abstract

English is important to be learned because it can be tools for everyone from different culture to communicate each other. Conversation partner program becomes one way to learn English especially to improve speaking, cross cultural knowledge and build social relationship. According to those advantages, conversation partner program has been offered at University of Muhammadiyah Gresik. But, there are no guideline yet so that the researcher tries to develop conversation partner module. In developing the module, the researcher uses ADDIE model. First step is need analysis in which the researcher must analyze the needs of target and their learning through interview with lecturer and participants. Second step is design in which the researcher develops syllabus and draft of the module based on need analysis. Third step is development in which the writer develops the module according to the draft. Fourth step is implementation in which researcher implements the module by conducting try out. Fifth step is evaluation in which by giving researcher gave questionnaire to participants and lecturer. The result in this research is a conversation partner program module which consists of eight units. This module contains eight units such as “An Introduction of Conversation Partner Program”, “How to Talk to Your Partner?”, “Getting to Know You”, “Hobby”, “Profession”, “Holiday & Travel”, “Art and Entertainment” and “Customs”. Conversation partner module is used for upper intermediate students to improve their speaking skills. In the content of the module, the writer uses combination of structural and functional language. The exercise is started by guided to free which are to make them comprehend the materials and produce words. The participants can use simulation, role play and discussion in pair. The aids which can help them in learning are realia, printed book and web-base dictionary. The researcher expects that the conversation partner module will give contribution for everyone who involves in conversation partner program. For the lecturer the module can be used as materials for teaching conversation partner program. For the participants, this module can be used for learning about conversation partner which can learned by themselves. For the next researchers, it is hoped that they will develop better materials of conversation partner further.
