Abstract

Thi study to know the effect of using Whatsapp group discussion towards students speaking abilit between Control Group and Experiment Group. This study was conducted in SMK YPI Darussalam 1 Cerme by using quasi experimental design. After getting the data, the researcher anlyzed the data by using independent sampe T-test in SPSS 15.0 program. The researcher finding showed that there was significant difference between students who were taugh by using Whatsapp group and students who were taugh by using repetition drill. The researcher found that the probability of groups was 0,087, it was less than the level of significance 0,05 (0,087 > 0.05) it showed that using Whatsapp group discussion could significantly influence students speaking ability. However, the rapid growth of mobile phone technology sometimes distracts them from their learn activities in the class. They don’t put their focus much on the lesson because of the attention to their mobile phone. Thus makes teacher should be creative enough to find an alternative way to anticipate this phenomenon. It can be said that the integration of WhatsApp into their education will be easy, fun, and useful. Students get positive feelings and intentions regarding the possible use of WhatsApp in their formal learning. One application that can be used is WhatsApp. In the features provided, students and teachers can interact with other using online. Discussion groups allow them to communicate, have the discussion, and they cansend pictures, recordings and more. All activities can be arranged by teachers so that students can improve their skills in English during the classroom activities. The last, the researcher suggest to English teachers that the use of social media like Whatsapp can support in teaching speaking, not only learning process in the classroom but also in outside the class and make the studentsinterested to learn English.
