Abstract
Writing is one way of expressing ideas in order to communicate with others. By writing, a writer can express his/her thoughts or ideas on the paper. In the level of university, the students should write a research aimed to require the last assignment called thesis. Thesis is a research report that is written by college for submitted to fulfill one of requirements to get the bachelor degree and also give the contribution for certain field of knowledge. Background study is the important part in students thesis because Background information identifies and describes the history and nature of a well-defined research problem with reference to the existing literature. The background information should indicate the root of the problem being studied, its scope, and the extent to which previous studies have successfully investigated the problem, noting, in particular, where gaps exist that your study attempts to address. Thus, the research question in this study is “How do the studets developing background of the study in writing thesis ?(1) Formulate a general statement, (2) Describe the thesis statement is accompanied by this gap, (3) Write down the closing paragraph. This study wa descriptive qualitative research. The researcher describe and analyzed the students' formulation in writing background of the study the research. The source of the data in this study is from reviewing and analyzing student's thesis script in English Language Education Department at University MuhammadiyahGresik of the grduation students in the year 2015. Moreover, the researcher used documentation is a tool in collecting data. The researcher analyzed 3 student's thesis script in the year 2015. From the result of this study, were most of the student's have the same problem in writing background study. In formulating general statement, most of the students have been able to formulate. However, in explaining the contents of the thesis statement detail and accompanied by this gap, the students have not explained in detail. In the closing paragraph in writing, students are still too common in writing the purpose of research, has not describe significant. This study can be as a reference for the lecture to be more observant noticed Background of Study written by the student and the student guidance should also pay more attention to the way of writing the Background of the Study.
