Abstract

This research was conducted based on the researcher’s experiences during teacher training at SMP Negeri 2 Kebomas which showed that the students had difficulty in writing especially in writing Descriptive text. In fact, the students’ writing score was low. The average score obtained from pre test for experimental and control group was 52.75 and 55.60. This research aimed to investigate the effect of using Four-Square writing method (FSWM) toward students’ writing ability in writing descriptive text. The research conducted to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Kebomas. Two classes of eighth grade students which consist of 56 students were chosen by using cluster sampling. The researcher applied quasi-experimental method and used pre-test and post-test for both experimental group and control group as the design. There were three steps used in collecting the data: giving pre-test for both groups at the beginning, giving treatments and post test at the end of the term. Descriptive writing test was given to measure students’ writing ability. Treatments was conducted for 6 meetings using FSWM only for the experimental group. After the data were collected, the researcher used t-test analysis to see the effect of using four-square method toward students’ writing ability. The results showed that the value of t-test was 3.081 with the degree of freedom (df) was 54. The value of t-table for respondents at 0.05 level of significant was 0.03. It was found that value of t-test was higher than the value of t-table. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. The effect was proved by the mean score of post-test that was higher than pre-test. Based on the research finding, it can be concluded that the use of FSWM gave significant effect toward students’ writing ability in writing descriptive text in term of content, organization, vocabulary, and langauge use. Three suggestions are provided. First, the English teacher is recommended to use FSWM as an effective method in teaching writing Descriptive text. Second, the researcher hopes FSWM can be used to motivate students in improving their writing. Third, for the further researcher it is suggested to conduct the research which delas with FSWM because this is a good method in teaching English.
