Abstract

Writing is the productive skill which expresses, explore and explain the writer's ideas into written text. In teaching learning writing, the students find some problems. The students feel difficult in arranging and developing the ideas. Then, the teacher has problem in applying appropriate method in teaching writing. So, the teacher need the alternative method which can be used for teaching learning writing. Based on the previous studies, four square method gave the positive effect for the students such as math, science education, reading and speaking. Thus, making different with the previous studies, the researcher applied four square in writing class that not only focus on the understanding the material but also the organization of the text This study was to investigate the significant effect of four square method on students’ writing recount ability. The design of this study is quasi experimental design. The researcher chose eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Giri which totally consisted of 44 students. The researcher chose the sample of the study through population sampling. It was divided 21 students of VIII-A as control group and 23 students of VIII-B as experimental. The data was collected by using tests; pre-test and post-test about writing recount text. After getting the data, the researcher analyzed the data using SPSS 16.00 and used Independent Sample T-test. The research finding showed that there was a significant difference between experimental group who were taught by using four square method and control group who were taught by think talk write. It is proven by the result of sig. (2-tailed) is .000. The sig. (2-tailed) is lower than 0.05 (0.00 < 0.05). So, null hypothesis (Ho) can be rejected. It means that four square method significantly effects on students' writing recount ability. The researcher concluded that four square method gave positive effect on student writing ability. Students were motivated in learning writing. They were more independent in learning writing especially in arranging and developing the ideas. Therefore, researcher suggests to English teacher for implementing of foursquare method as an alternative method in English teaching learning process. For a further researcher, the researcher hope that uses foursquare method in other skill and another level to make different with the previous study.
