Abstract

This study described about the implementation of project work in English learning at Junior High School. Project work method is one of the methods that make the students more active in problem solving and improving skills in managing resources to complete the task. Project work method is the right choice to the active, creative, and fun learning. During the learning process, students are given the opportunity to develop their creativity and innovation to produce work. The problem here, the students are passive in English class. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative. The researcher used this design in order to analyze the project work method in English learning for the eight grade students at Junior High School. The researcher conducted the observation and interview. In this study, there are two cycles of observation and interview twice. The first cycle of the observation do in VIII I class at 3 meetings. It start from 10th February 2016 up to 17th February 2016. The second cycle of the observation do in VIII F class at 3 meetings start from 22th August 2016 up to 24th August 2016. Interview are English teacher and students. The researcher took eight grades as subject of the study. The instruments of this study were observation and interview. The researcher conducted three meetings in two cycles and the researcher analyzed the result of observation compared by the result of interview. Based on the observation in this study show that the implementation of project work in English learning at SMPN 1 Cerme, the teacher and students is hold three phase are planning phase, doing phase and communicating phase. In planning phase there are selecting the topic, creating a general outline, doing basic the research around the topic. In doing phase there is reporting to the class. In communicating phase there is presenting the topic. In selecting the topic, the researcher conclude that the strength of the activity is the students can make a topic and the students can express the idea. Students can discuss with members of each group to discuss the concept of their project. Creating a general outline, the researcher conclude that the strength of the activity is the students can make a writing appropriate procedure a writing. The students can easier to writing something. Doing basic the research around the topic, the researcher conclude that the strength of the activity is the students. The student can make Search resources are use as material preparation of the material. Reporting to the class, the researcher conclude that the strength of the activity is the students can write descriptive text well. In writing activities, the teacher can know the students’ progress in descriptive text material. Presenting the project, the researcher conclude that the strength of the activity is the students can give opportunity to speak. This is consistent with the concept of learning speaking. This method could make learning become active, antusiasm and the students more brave to asking question, answer question and present the result of project. The student also more spirit to discuss with each group. This method teach the students to be able to write appropriate procedures of writing. Project work method suitable with genre text such as descriptive text and report text. The students’ responses are also very good. They are interest in learning by using this method. Finally, it can be concluded that project work method make students more active and creative to English learning. The researcher give some suggestions, firstly the teacher should more creative in quality of learning. Secondly, the students should be more perceptive. Thirdly, the researcher suggested the next researcher to conduct research in the same lesson in different level. The researcher hope that this study can afford an idea for English teachers in improving their teaching skill using project work method and there are some other researchers who observe and conduct another research in different way because it help us to teach English better especially English teaching using project work method.
