Abstract

This study focuses on the difficulties faced by the second grade students of senior high school in reading comprehension. The purposes of the study were to find out the difficulties faced by the second grade students of MA. Mambaus Sholihin, Gresik and to find out the factors of difficulties in reading comprehension. The method applied was mix method, where the questionnaire and interview were used as the instrument data collection methods. The questionnaire consist of 10 items divided into five types of questions, which were main idea, detail information, making inferences, locating reference, and vocabulary. “Gender Differences in Reading Comprehension Achievement” concludes that the term of gender plays different performance and achievement in reading comprehension. There are some influences of gender differences toward reading comprehension achievement. It was shown from the result of reading comprehension questionnaire among 40 male students and 40 female students it found out that each gender has their concern of difficulties in reading comprehension although the questions for male and female students are same. As for female students, 41.25% or 17 students choose the main idea as the difficult aspect of reading comprehension. For male students, 55% of them or among 22 students they choose identifying reference as the difficult aspect of reading comprehension. Male students tend to use such discussion in reading strategy while female students tend to use writing activities in reading strategy.
