Abstract

This study was conducted based on the preliminary study in MTs Negeri Gresik which shown that the students had difficulty in narrative text. In fact, the students’ score in writing were low. The average score obtained from the pre test was 64,45 and the passing grade (KKM) for English lesson was 75. It’s mean that the students could not achieve the standard minimum of the school. This problem happened because the teacher used a monotonous techinque in teaching narrative text. The teacher just explain and give assignment to the students. This way made the students had difficulty in writing narrative text. So, the researcher wants to solve the problem by applying a new media. This study conducted in MTs Negeri Gresik. This study aimed to improve writing skill in narrative text by using movie clips as a media at eighth grade students in MTs Negeri Gresik. The design of the study was classroom action research. The researcher played two roles in this research; as a teacher and researcher. During implementing movie clips in the classroom, the researcher was accompanied by a teacher partner. This research was conducted in one cycle which divided into four main activities; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The reflection based on the findings during the observation and compared with the criteria of success including the average students’ score were >75 (passing grade for English lesson). The research findings showed that this media was effective to teach writing skill at eighth grade in Mts Negeri Gresik. The students’ average score in pre test was 64,45. The scores improved in post test. The students’ average score in post test was 80,90. The improvement was also shown in the students’ performances in the class when the researcher asked them to write on the board, the students become more active in the class than before. The result of questionnaire that distributed to the students, shown that the students more enjoyed the learning narrative with movie clips. because of the movie clips media was new experience for the students in learning narrative, in here they could share the idea in writing with other friends. Based on the research findings, some suggestions are provided. The first, the English teachers are recommended to use movie clips as a media in teaching writing narrative text. The second, the next researchers who want to conduct a research using this media are recommended to conduct this research in different areas, levels, and skills.
