Abstract

This study was conducted based on the consideration of the problems that the students had in vocabulary mastery at the second grade of SD Muhammadiyah Gresik. The researcher found that students’ vocabulary mastery was low. Based on the preliminary study, the fact that the average score obtained from the pre test was 61, 38 and the passing grade (KKM) for English lesson was 65. It means that, the students could not achieve the minimum standard of the school. The subjects in this study were the second grade students of SD Muhammadiyah Gresik. This study was to investigate “how can custom animation power point in cooperative learning improve the second grade students’ vocabulary mastery”. The design of the study is classroom action research. This research was conducted in one cycle which divided into four main activities; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The criteria of success including; (1) the students’ average score in pre test are 65. (2) the students are motivated to join activities on strategy. The research findings showed that custom animation power point in cooperative learning was effective strategy to teach vocabulary at SD Muhammadiyah Benjeng. The students’ score of pre test was 61, 38. It was improvement in post test, 88. Some procedures found after implementing the strategy, they were: (1 )teacher opened custom animation power point when teaching vocabulary and she could be standing in front of class and teaching her or his students using custom animation power point in slides presentation with pictures and sound as media for teaching, (2) teacher divided students in a small group and gave instruction to do activities related the material, (3) students worked together in each group to do the teacher’s instruction or activities during lesson, (4) teacher called one student in each group randomly to present their work or task in front of class and other students in their group must help their friends in the same groups if they got difficulty in doing activities or teacher’s instruction. Based on the research findings, three suggestions are provided. The first, the English teachers has to consider the time allotment to teach and the level of the students that they teach. The second, the school/ headmaster should provide the facilities that support teaching technique using multimedia or audio visual such as LCD/Projector, laptop or mini compo, sound system, etc. The third, the next researcher should apply custom animation power point in cooperative learning to improve skills in English; listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and different level.
