Abstract

Discourse analysis is the study about language in use in which it shows how the sentences are related in form and meaning to become coherent text. Coherence and cohesion are complement, furthermore the coherence can be analyzed through the cohesion namely its cohesive devices. The problem in this study are: the cohesiveness of the Jakarta post editorials, the types of cohesive devices used, the use of grammatical cohesive devices, and the use of lexical cohesive devices. In this study, the writer use Halliday and Hasan (1976 ) theory to interpret the category of cohesive devices in which it is used to answer (he problems. This study is population and sample where takes a group of sample directly from the population in the Jakarta post editorials from its quality or in the form of words or sentences. The result of the study shows that the Jakarta post editorials are cohesive. Its cohesiveness can be seen through the use of cohesive devices. The types of cohesive devices used are grammatical and lexical cohesive deuces. Also the result of the study indicates that cohesion plays an important role in forming the coherence in the Jakarta post editorials. In this study, there are 1158 times of the use of cohesive devices. The use of grammatical cohesive devices is 1101 times and lexical cohesive devices are 57 times. Based on the research finding, it can be concluded that grammatical cohesive devices is dominate the use of cohesive devices in the Jakarta post editorials. Finally, in order to develop the finding of this study, the writer suggests that the next study on the same topic be concluded. In addition, the next study with different focus or different object also can be conducted like, how is the discourse structure of the Jakarta post editorial? Furthermore, she hopes t lat an article of newspaper can be used as an alternative means to teach discourse analysis; especially, cohesion.
