Abstract

This study was conducted based on the consideration of the problems that the students had in writing their ideas into sentences at the second grade of MTs Daruttaqwa Suci Gresik. As an English teacher, the researcher found that students’ writing skill was low. Based on the preliminary study, the fact that the average score obtained from the daily test was 61,03 and the passing grade (SKM) for English lesson was 75. It means that, the students could not achieve the minimum standard of the school target. It was also found that the students still got difficult to generate their ideas into sentences and how to write correctly with grammatical structure.The purpose of this study is to improve students’ writing skill by using diary writing in second grade of Mts Daruttaqwa Manyar Gresik. The kind of this research is classroom action research which was conducted in one cycle which divided into four main activities; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The reflection based on the findings during the observation and compared with the criteria of success including; (1) students’ average score is 75 (passing grade for English lesson), and (2) students can participate actively in the class. The result of this study is this strategy was effective to teach writing at the second grade of MTs Daruttaqwa suci. It was indicated on the students’ average score of post test in cycle 1. The students’ average score in daily test from the teacher was 61,03, .The scores improved in post test. The students’ average score in post test from the teacher was 76, while the students’ average score from the teacher partner was 78,06. The improvement was also shown in the students’ performances in the class. In the first meeting, the percentage of the students’ performances was 69%. It increased in the second meeting, 73%. The third meeting was 78% and increased significantly in the fourth meeting, 86%. The implementation of diary writing technique in teaching writing could improve students’ writing skill. It could help the students not only in the writing process but also the result of students’ scores. Diary writing technique could help the students to improve their writing skill Based on the research findings, two suggestions are provided. The first, the English teachers are recommended that diary writing technique was a good technique to teach writing to the students The second, the next researchers who want to conduct a research using Diary writing technique are recommended to conduct this research in different areas, levels, and skills.
