Abstract

Reading comprehension is one of reading aspect which is essential to obtain academic learning success especially in English context. Especially in curriculum 2013, learning english more emphasize on speaking skill. So that, reading being a main problem here especially the examination of english learning mostly using multiple choices or essay questions and those need the comprehension of reading skill. In addition, traditional teaching method not really cover the way to make them more motivated to find the answers by their critical thinking. So, the researcher apply the appropriate strategy of reading comprehension named PORPE ( Predict, Organize, Rehearse and Evaluate).which is appropriate in improving their reading comprehension. This study is aimed to investigate the significant effect of PORPE strategy toward students’s reading comprehension at SMA NU 2 Gresik. This study was conducted in SMA NU 2 Gresik. The design of this study was quasi experimental design. The population of this study was the eleven grade of SMA NU 2 Gresik. The researcher use IPA 2 and IPA 3 as the sample. Which is IPA 2 as the control group and IPA 3 as the experimental group, and every group consist of 30 students. The data was collected from pre-test and post-test about analytical exposition material. Before the instrument was used, the try out was done to know the validity and reliability of instrument. After getting the data, the researcher analyzed the data by using SPSS 16.0 program. The research findings showed that there was a significant difference between experimental group and control group. It was proven by the result of the sig.(2-tailed) is 0.031. The sig. (2-tailed) is lower than 0,05 ( 0.021< 0.05), so the null hypothesis (H0) can be rejected. It means that PORPE has a positive effect to the students’s reading comprehension and it can improve their comprehension through their critical thinking. The researcher suggest to the English teacher for implementing PORPE as an alternative strategy in teaching reading comprehension. Furthermore, the students should try to hard thinking in comprehending the text and continously train themselves with text and exercise. The researcher hopes that further research can use this strategy in other skill, different of text, and other any level.
